Balanced Man Program

No Pledging, No Hazing. Period.

In the fall of 1992 Sigma Phi Epsilon changed the college fraternity world forever by implementing a new and unique membership development program. Gone are the days of pledges and the eight weeks of "development" usually involving demeaning activities. In its place is a continuous development program that graduates brothers and prepares them for a journey of life and brotherhood.

Most people think that becoming a member in a fraternity often involves physical and mental challenges. Indeed, fraternal history is littered with stories, some true, some not, about outrageous and often dangerous acts required of a fraternal pledge. In the eyes of Sigma Phi Epsilon, these methods are not constructive. In fact, we believe they are counterproductive.

The Balanced Man Program (BMP) is based on the concept that life is a continuous journey. The Journey will be marked by many challenges. Sigma Phi Epsilon is striving to better prepare its members to face and surmount these challenges by providing the most innovative program in the fraternity world.

The Balanced Man Program concentrates on both the development of the individual and of the chapter as a whole. In particular, the BMP focuses on mentoring, campus and community involvement, and the Ritual. The Program also focuses on the development of a sound mind and a sound body; key factors in being a fully balanced man.

As the first of its kind, the Balanced Man Program has been widely accepted (and even praised), by universities across the United States as the ideal fraternal program; it is structured to enhance a young man’s life and build him into a leader of the future.

It is the goal of both the Sigma Phi Epsilon National Association and the New York Chi chapter to recruit, acclimate, build, and retain the optimal balance of quantity and quality of young men in the fraternity world.

Above all else, a SigEp is a Scholar, an Athlete, a Leader, and a Gentleman.

Cardinal Principles

  • Virtue

    • Virtue is the moral essence of the Fraternity. Living a virtuous life is making the most of your time and talents with unfailing integrity.
  • Dilligence

    • Diligence is the force that drives the fraternity. Living diligently is living your best life with courage and tenacity.
  • Brotherly Love

    • Brotherly Love is the foundation of the fraternity. Living with Brotherly Love is supporting fellow citizens through true and active friendship.

Balanced Man Ideals

  • The Idea

    • Sigma Phi Epsilon believes that the body is central to humanity, and that the body serves as a vessel for the mind. Therefore, exercise of both is essential for leading a balanced lifestyle.
  • Sound Mind

    • Developing a sound mind means living a lifestyle that allows you to expand and challenge your mind both inside and outside of the classroom. SigEp chapters utilize sound mind programming to take learning beyond study hours and classrooms. We push our members to strive to find unique and innovative ways to continually stimulate themselves and others intellectually to set themselves up not only for success while in college, but professional success after graduation.
  • Sound Body

    • Maintaining a sound body goes beyond working out. It includes all aspects of personal health. Sound body programming applies to all members, and helps to develop a well rounded approach to developing sound body habits that last beyond the undergraduate years.
